Metabolic syndrome is the presence of three or more of the following conditions…

  • Fasting blood sugar of 100 mg/dl or higher
  • Systolic blood pressure of 130 mm Hg or higher and/or diastolic blood pressure 85 mm Hg or higher
  • HDL cholesterol less than 40 mg/dl in men or 50 mg/dl in women
  • Triglycerides of 150 mg/dl or higher
  • Waist circumference 40 inches or greater for men and 35 inches or greater in women in the US

This “cluster” of factors known as metabolic syndrome doubles heart disease risk with a five-fold risk increase of developing Type 2 diabetes. Metabolic syndrome has also been connected to cancers, including prostate, breast, endometrial, colorectal, and liver.

Metabolic syndrome affects 35 percent of US adults and 10 percent of adolescents.

Are the effects of shift work putting your heart at risk?

effects-of-shift-workAccording to the bureau of Labor Statistics, 15 million people work evening shift, night shift, rotating shifts or other schedules outside the traditional 9 am to 5 pm work day. These non-traditional hours are called shift work.

Some shift workers include nurses, doctors, firefighters, police officers, flight attendants, pilots, waitresses, and truck drivers.

Shift work had been linked to various health conditions.

Cardiovascular disease: Shift work increases cardiovascular disease on average 40%. The longer you perform shift work, the greater your risk.

Diet Soda: Good or Bad for Your Heart Health

diet-sodaResearch is shedding light on the impact drinking diet soda can have on your health. A study with 2,500 participants was presented at the American Stroke Association International Stroke Conference. Study results found those who drank diet soda daily had a 61 percent increased risk of cardiovascular events versus those who did not consume soda. These results remained even when factors such as smoking, physical activity levels, alcohol consumption, and dietary intake were taken into account.

Researchers did go a step further and took into account these 3 situations:

  1. Metabolic Syndrome
  2. Peripheral Vascular Disease
  3. Cardiac Disease History

When these were factored in, the cardiovascular risk associated with drinking diet soda did decrease to 48%… 48% is still significant.

A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology has found individuals with a healthy weight and metabolic syndrome are at increased risk of heart failure when compared to overweight individuals that are metabolically healthy.

High Blood Pressure Linked to Memory Problems

A large French study examining 7087 participants over the age of 65 years-old with 16% of the study participants living with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is defined as have three of the following risk factors – high blood pressure, excess belly fat, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and/or high blood sugar. Participants with metabolic syndrome were 20% more likely to have cognitive decline.
