Is Coffee Good for Your Health?

A 10-year Swedish Mammography Cohort Study looked at the connection between lifestyle and disease development. The study included 34,670 women between the ages of 48 to 83. All the women were healthy and without cardiovascular disease at the start of the study.

The study found women who consumed one or more cups of coffee per day throughout the ten year study had a reduced stroke risk of 22-25% compared to the women drinking less than one cup of coffee daily.

Women consuming more than 5 cups of coffee show the same benefits as those drinking one cup.

What Nutrients are in Coffee?

Coffee’s main active ingredient is caffeine, with small amounts of fat, vitamins, minerals, and protein. The level of nutrients found in coffee is dependent on how the coffee beans are processed. The grinding and roasting process eliminates the dietary fibers found naturally in coffee beans.

One cup of black coffee (8 fl oz) contains less than one mg of sodium, no cholesterol, and almost no carbohydrates and fat.

More studies are being conducted on the health benefits of coffee, so this is not a definitive analysis.

Enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning may not be a bad thing. . . just remember what you put in it! Don’t counteract the potential benefits with loads of sugar and cream.
