Unfortunately, studies show weight loss efforts are on the decline as obesity rates in the U.S. continue to rise. Research by America on the Move found most individuals agree that a support network of family and friends is essential to lose and maintain weight loss, but only 40 percent say their family and friends support and encourage them as they make positive changes to promote weight loss. Only 16% of American's report encouragement from immediate family and close friends.
Also, a New England Journal of Medicine study found individuals participating in group support sessions adhered to their weight loss goals and lost more weight versus those who do not seek group support when losing weight.
The latest research findings emphasize how greatly social support influences weight loss success. If your family and friends do not make healthy choices it will be very difficult to "go against the grain" and achieve weight loss success.
